Oh my. That poor woman with the spiral notebooks!

Lee, you're to be commended for not whamming your forehead into the table repeatedly in frustration. I'm on a local panel this weekend and, based on the one last year, am anticipating similar questions.

Current favorite: An acquaintance wrote a 60K saga about how she got shafted by the Old Boy Network, and asked me to read it. I did, offered some gentle suggestions (which were considered personal insults), and was ultimately told I was "just a downer" and a lady at her church had FIVE books out and had said much nicer things; evidently, I "didn't get it.". I asked about the "friend", did a quick Google, and yes, the friend does have five books out from the same Vanity Press Publisher. I tried to explain how it's supposed to work, and ended up being condescended to and hung up on.

Makes me wonder.

OMG! This reinforces the reason for my self-inflicted absence from such events -- I found interacting with my potential readers depressing. My all time favorite is "Have I ever read anything you've written?" To which I replied, "Yes, and you loved it."
With at least one new book coming out in 2008, I'll be back in the public eye answering such questions as "where do you get your ideas?"
