"A man asked me to sign my books. As I signed them, he asked: "Do you get paid for writing these?"
"Yes, I do."
"Is that unusual? Or do all writers get paid?"
"They do if they are writing for a reputable, legitimate publisher."
He shook his head. "That's hard to believe."

Bwahahahaha! Well, you know the guy *has* a point. I sometimes have difficulties believing it myself when turning the last page of some crappy book.

Those damn litigious monks. I hear they've been embroiled in legal battles with Kurt Vonnegut for years over Welcome to the Monkeyhouse. You could be next.

Those are right up there with my favorite questions, such as: Did you write that review? How much did the review cost?

A man approached me carrying a half-a-dozen of my books. "So you wrote all these books?"

"Yes, sir."

"Did you come up with the plots, too?"

"Yes, I did."

"Wow," he said. "I wonder how many other writers do that."

Considering it sounds as if the man in question might be toting around the MONK books, the question is not as absurd as it seems. I believe the general belief is that tie-in writing is often not original, but a matter of hiring a writer to create novels based on either actual episodes or outlines created by the publisher.

I am doing a book series for a packager and have discovered that most folks seem to assume packagers always plan each plot and the novel is just coloring inside the lines.

Just when I thought I'd heard it all ...

That's a whole tour's worth of insanity in one afternoon! Great comments. So great, I stole them today. Okay, I flogged your blog on www.nakedauthors.com.

Hilarious!

Now that is funny.

For reals.

Invariably, there's one little old lady who wants you to help her publish her stories or recipes. But my favorite came when I was in a bookstore in Arkansas, doing a signing for an Alice in Wonderland sequel I had just completed. A man asked me what my book was about, and I told him it was a sequel. Then he asked, "Did you write the original Alice in Wonderland?"

I know I look older than my 40 years, but c'mon...
