Engines for Bootlegging
I was looking for information on the TV series HARRY O today…and one of the sponsored Google
listings took me to a slick site that sells bootleg DVDs of TV shows. So did the same search on Yahoo.
At DVDAvenue.tv (which also does business under the name TVDVDmania.tv, DVDCraze.tv,TVDVDPlanet.com and TVAddicts.tv and probably a whole bunch of others) you can buy complete series boxed sets of shows
like SPENSER: FOR HIRE, BOSTON PUBLIC, JUDGING AMY, ED, JAG, ADAM-12, WONDER
WOMAN, EMERGENCY, NY UNDERCOVER, HAWAII FIVE-O, IT TAKES A THIEF, DYNASTY, STREETS
OF SAN FRANCISCO, all of which are currently not being sold commercially by
their rights-holders.
But DVDAvenue doesn’t stop there…they are even selling
bootleg versions of shows like REMINGTON STEELE, KNIGHTRIDER, SEAQUEST, THE
NIGHT STALKER, THE PRISONER, PRIME SUSPECT and MY SO-CALLED LIFE which are
readily available at your local Best Buy...only they charge a lot more for them.
I’m stunned that the legal departments of Warner Brothers, NBC/Universal, and Paramount Television haven’t caught on to these guys yet. It’s not like DVDAvenue.tv is being discreet about their law-breaking.
UPDATE 1-22-07: I received this comment from one of my readers:
I too was ripped off by these guys. I made a number of inquiries abou them. It turns out they are already under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, this because they are in fact located in Canada. I spoke with a Sgt. Jean-Yves Ducharme, who told me that they have been conducting an investigation since late 2006 and he would welcome any call from those defrauded by these guys. Here is his contact info:

You think these DVD's are "complete", or 'filmed off TV' such as syndicated reruns etc. In which they are often cut by 3 to 4 minutes of original air time. Such as 'Emergency!' on TV Land was severely cut for commercials from original airing.
People are selling complete sets (DVD's) of 'Third Watch' as well. The first 2 seasons were released by Warner Brothers, but ONLY in Japan which is Region 2 and not playable in the US(Region 1).
Yeah, would be nice to get if no where else available but quality, how much am I missing from the original, as well as other legal issues weigh heavy.

The Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series is commercially available on DVD.
Posted by:Ray | Wednesday, May 03, 2006 at 10:41 AM
Official DVD releases often do have the snips made for reruns.
Not that this makes these right.

Are there network bugs in the bottom right corner of the screen?
Posted by:Dan | Wednesday, May 03, 2006 at 01:21 PM
The bugs mean nothing. The official Rocky and Bullwinkle releases have them as well.

Several local SF and comics conventions give dealer room space to folks who sell bootleg TV DVDs. That's dangerous in light of case law holding that flea markets can be held liable for copyright infringement for allowing sellers of bootleg audio recordings to operate.

i have been waiting for a couple of replacement discs, because the copies they made were shit and did not work. My next step is to turn them into the better business bureau and into the ICCP/FBI and turn them in there

Hello, does anyone have any ideas how to stop these bootleggers. I have stoped them on Yahoo and google adwords but they change their site name and keep comming back. They don't seem to care at all about the law or that they have been caught by the copyright owner.

Is the web site HARMONYDVD.COM another of the illegal sale sites that seem to be around on the internet and selling TV DVD sets?
Posted by:Howard Shapiro | Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 11:03 PM
Yes, it's OBVIOUSLY a site selling bootleg videos. All it takes it thirty seconds to figure that out.
Posted by: | Monday, July 17, 2006 at 09:36 AM
I stumbled across your blog while I was doing some online research. I have strong feelings about this issue. I don't feel anyone should support bootleggers on any level. They're thieves, pure and simple.

My question:
"Are these legal copies? I noticed the Matlock series is not available anywhere else and has not been 'officially' released. Are these made from the original source files (Contain no commercials, screen markings or station id?)"

I was stupid and ordered from tvdvdplanet.com. Now I'm in big problems with the tull here in Europe. They are fakes. Please, do not buy!

I just got burned by them on an order for Blake's 7. A disk was missing and the quality was shit. They're on my shit list now and I'm gonna go after 'em.
Posted by: | Wednesday, November 01, 2006 at 07:38 PM
Hi, I have also been burned by this 'dodgy, multiple fronts company'. Desperately trying to find the full set of 'I Dream of Jeannie', I could only locate it at tvdvdplanet.com (or the various, various other names listed above). From the website it all looked legit, but then I had a very similar thing happen as to what others have reported here. The dvds arrived, with some minor damage...however, the copies were clearly VERY poorly burnt, many episodes were missing, some episodes repeated on different discs, episodes were all out of order, the menu didnt work and there were numerous tv ads throughout ALL of the dvds (some had more ads than show!) Not to mention the quality of the picture and sound was VERY bad. Overall I have to say that I have NEVER in my life seen dvd's burnt so badly. Who have they got working for them, and do they even check the dvds before they send them out??? I have contacted this company numerous times via email and their 'live chat' service. They keep promising me they will send me out a prepaid envelope to send the faulty dvd's back in as well as send me out a new set of proper dvds.... but they just keep telling me its on its way, and its been over 6 weeks now since I first contacted them about this problem! Id like to know what others have done about this issue, who should I report them to, and what are the chances of getting a refund on the $180 AU I spent?? Thanks.

as i came across the net i got hungup on this sobering winnie site (or at least this part of it) where their seem to be some people complaining on how they got hooked by a wham-bam-ridiculous to-good-to-be-true-bargain-pricing-offer normally a numb headed nerd would be able to notice and get a mind on that there must be something foul and smelly on behalf of these super cheap products.
i mean - wasn't it clear from the beginning that when you get a set of DVDs with 70-80-150 or even more episodes for a scrap-pricing of sometimes 40-100$ or even less that it may be perhaps "illegal" what's going on!
ever got that in mind before you start bitchin' around in the first place - or complaining about that you've been "robbed & laid" and then go pussing about it at the FBI for revenge like a little baby?
but well - on the other hand it is more than just only of understanding to me that there will be some people who get a nick out of the obviously present and existing public demand for offering such products when the original companies and owners are to knuckelheaded to get a legal product on the market when demand clearly should be seen and served.
and also it should be clear that there are a number of people on this planet who will take advantage of such offers even when companies at last do recognise that there is a need and chip in - but then mostly for a ridiculously high pricing which never holds up with the real worth of the product itself.
like see - just for an example - the STAR TREK releases (or many many others) going from 60-90$ and up for a single season box. damned!!!
i'm not throwing mud and putting owners in a wrong corner even though it sounds like it. naturally: "everybody has the right to put on a price for their product at their own thought"...
...but also:
no one should be surprised and complaining when potential costumers do not except "robbery" on behalf of some greedy companies interests and policies on (mostly) old productions wich have paid themselves off a numerous times in the past. assuming that interested customers are all numb and wack in the head and will be stupid enough to go for anything. even if some do, the majority will not.
it's just an idea of keeping mind set on reasonable good 2 cents.
a good example for reasonable marketing is the “F-R-I-E-N-D-S All (10) Seasons Box” for approximately around 200$. that is a legal and fair offer by WARNER BROS that almost anyone with “healthy” legal interest can go for.
do to piracy – not even a very big chance. because it would not really work out well by the small profits this would throw off for the work of thieving - but will work out for the companies because they simply sell a huger number of copies in an excellent quality.
so what should we learn?
if everyone would just be a little more reasonable: the companies about their “maybe” customers needs and demands, marketing and pricing - and the costumers themselves about their buying behaviors - it would just work out fine and in a fair mutual benefit for both sides.

the reply above this is clearly someone to do with tvdvdplanet!
Film piracy in the UK is:
A business generating over £270m a year for criminals
A crime which affects other people and the wider community – involving benefit fraud, people smuggling, drugs and other serious criminality
A real crime, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment
The seemingly innocent purchase of a cheap DVD from an irregular source can therefore have far reaching effects. For further examples of the effects of DVD piracy in the UK, please go to our Media Centre and view the latest case studies and statistics.
While the Federation is not a statutory body, it is accepted as a prosecution authority in its own right and facilitates the investigation and prosecution of those involved in this type of crime.
“DVD and online piracy must be recognised as a crime of growing national significance. In 2005 alone FACT seized over 2 million pirate DVDs and our in house forensic services team assisted the Police, Trading Standards and HM Revenue & Customs in examining close to 1 million DVDs.
Our aim is to help create an effective deterrent to film piracy in the UK by increasing public awareness of this type of criminal activity that can have a destructive influence on local communities.
Through our technical and forensic capabilities FACT continues to support law enforcement agencies to increase the number of investigations of the principal figures involved and to squeeze and close down their sales and distribution networks.
With your help and support we can do more. The biggest thing you can do is not to buy them.”
Raymond Leinster
Following the intelligence-led initiative, the ten were arrested under suspicion of being involved in the production and sale of counterfeit optical discs, and some of those arrested were also in receipt of benefits. Cash, drugs and cigarettes were also seized during the raids. Those arrested were taken to police stations in North Wales and Cheshire and are helping with further enquiries.

CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER RECEIVES 15 MONTH JAIL SENTENCE FOR FILM PIRACY OFFENCES
Gary Fenn, age 35, from Ilford, Essex was sentenced yesterday to 15 months imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court for Conspiracy to Defraud the film industry and another 15 months for Conspiracy to Defraud the music industry – both sentences to run concurrently.
Fenn is currently serving a five year jail term for making indecent images of children and yesterday’s sentence is to run consecutively. The Judge recommended that seven and a half months be served in prison and the remainder on licence.
Also sentenced yesterday at Snaresbrook was Fenn’s co-defendant Paul Tooley, age 31, from Chadwell St Mary, Essex, who received a jail term of 10 months for Conspiracy to Defraud the film industry and 10 months for Conspiracy to Defraud the music industry (both sentences to run concurrently). The Judge also made a recommendation that he serve five months in prison and five months on licence. Both defendants pleaded guilty to these Conspiracy charges. Whilst Tooley is a co-conspirator in this case, he was not involved in the making of indecent images of children.
The case was prosecuted by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (‘FACT’) and the organisation was awarded full costs by the Court. In addition, all property seized, including computers and equipment, was ordered for destruction.
Both Fenn and Tooley were manufacturing pirate DVDs and CDs and selling them on local markets and via advertisements and were arrested in May 2004.
Kieron Sharp, FACT Director General commented: “I am pleased that another FACT prosecution has been so successful. Both defendants were involved in a film and music piracy operation that was making them thousands of pounds and was deliberately intended to defraud legitimate FACT member companies.
This is also another example of the other very serious criminality with which film piracy can be associated. FACT is increasingly able to evidence this associated criminality and bring it to the public’s attention. ”

You guys all need to understand a little bit about tvdvdplanet and the other names they go by. And you need to realize what companies like them are selling.
First off, TVDVDPLANET, DVDAVENUE, DVDCRAZE are not US based. Even tho the whois information on their domain names often says miami florida.. you will notice the address doesn't exist and the zipcode isn't real. Also they do go a step further to promise satisfaction and offer live help chat but it is all a front. They have no intentions on helping you or replacing your discs. If you track back their whois and name server addresses you eventually come to a Llc Globalwholesaletrade company which is registered in the Federation of Russia where they don't follow US copyright laws. Nor can the MPAA or any other american agency do anything about it.
The sets are also using cheap cases from china, which is also known for their bootlegging, however china actually uses "real" studio quality prints, where as these guys are just using Home recordings.
I have purchased a few recorded shows from sites like theirs (tho not theirs specifically) and I think you guys area bit overexcited to bad mouth these people because the quality is not as good as real official copies.. but they aren't supposed to be. Thats why they are cheaper. I will admit tvdvdplanets prices are much higher than where i've bought stuff, but you are also getting professional looking custom artwork on the cases and they are shrink wrapping them. So you are paying extra for that.
Most sites I've bought from just use paper sleeves and generic dvd media and I get what I expect. Lower, 1980's quality for a hell of a cheap price. But I almost always get replacement discs if they are defective from them because they aren't out to screw you, they are just collectors of old tv shows like you.
But this is NOT stealing, or infringement, or anything else. Realize that you ALL probably have VCRs and TiVo's in your house. Are you stealing when you record a show from normal free tv networks? The tv shows are free to watch for everyone. As of the 1984 Sony vs Universal Studios case, VCR Recordings for personal use are legal. So long as you are not broadcasting the copies on a television network publically, they can't tell you not to watch it again and can't tell you not to borrow it to your friends or make a copy for your friend if he pays you $5.
As a tv show collector, I like being able to get the shows that aren't out yet.. or that aren't completely released yet.. but really the TV Networks are scamming you. They give you the show for free the first time, but make you pay to have it on DVD? How is that any different than what these guys do? They have higher quality in the real version but thats only because most companies like tvdvdplanet compress the shows down.
But really these are for fanboys who can't get a hold of their old favorites because they don't exist yet. They are meant for collectors. I don't agree with tvdvdplanets methods but I am a fanboy who loves watching Perfect Strangers (which isn't available anywhere else yet).
The sites that sell the recordings are heroes as long as they are honest about what they are selling. They allow us to watch the same shows we could have watched ourselves if we were smart enough to record them all back in the day.

I have ordered the Cosby Show DVDs and "boy!" having hard time receiving them.
It has been over three months now and the order had not been done right.
Please do something about them. I do not know how to fight against them. If you know how and want me to be in the list, I am very willing.
PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE CON-PEOPLE.

When VCRs came on the market in the US, Movie makers tried to ban them due to fear of distribution & loss of profits. The Supreme Court ruled that copying for personal use and copying for profit were different.I thank everyone who posted here, and stated the warnings clearly. FACT WELCOMES TIGHTENING OF LAWS ON FILM PIRACY
The Federation Against Copyright Theft (‘FACT’) is pleased with the announcement by The Chancellor, Gordon Brown, in his Pre Budget Report, following the recommendations of Andrew Gowers, that stronger enforcement is needed to tackle the problem of film piracy.
We welcome the statement that there will be tighter penalties for illegal copying and piracy and the recognition of intellectual (‘IP’) crime in the National Community Safety Plan, as well as the additional funding for enforcement by Trading Standards. It is also pleasing to see that there is a recommendation in the Gowers Report for the regulation of so-called ‘occasional sales’ such as markets and car boot sales.
Kieron Sharp, FACT Director General commented: “Film piracy has been seen by some as a ‘soft’ crime yet it brings harm and other serious criminal activity to local communities. It also has proven involvement with organised crime in the UK and internationally.
FACT has strengthened its resource and capability over the past year and is now the pre eminent anti-piracy organisation in the UK.
Criminals made over £270 million from film piracy in 2005, making this the worst affected single sector for intellectual property crime out of all IP industries. This is revenue that has been lost to the local and national economy and is affecting British jobs.”
FACT works with Police and Trading Standards across the UK to ensure that those involved in film piracy are punished for their actions and we are starting to see some stronger sentencing meted out by the Courts.

EBAY FILM PIRATE HAS RECORD £55,000 ASSETS SEIZURE
- LORD OF THE RINGS WAS TOP SELLING ITEM -
A prolific seller of pirate DVDs on eBay has been ordered to pay £55,000 under Proceeds Of Crime legislation following a judgement on Friday (1st December) at Bradford Crown Court.
Peter Spencer, who has already served a jail sentence for his piracy activities, had also been the subject of an investigation by the Assets Recovery Agency. This sum is the highest asset seizure to date for a FACT prosecuted film piracy case. The £55,000 was adjudged to be the criminal profit made by Spencer from his pirate DVD sales.
He must now pay the £55,000 to the Exchequer within 12 months or face a two year custodial sentence - with the money still owing and payable to the Exchequer.
FACT brought its own prosecution against Spencer, age 39, from Oakhall Park, Bradford after monitoring his trade in counterfeit DVDs on eBay since 2002. Spencer was sentenced to a six month jail term in May 2006 at Bradford Crown Court.
In just one day in January 2004 Spencer had over 950 pirate DVDs listed for sale on eBay and FACT’s Internet Investigations Team was able to show that just one title alone, Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King, made him over £14,000.
Kieron Sharp, FACT Director General said:
“This is another important milestone and it demonstrates the effectiveness of the Proceeds Of Crime Act. The use of this legislation to target the criminal profits gained from film piracy in addition to the custodial sentences handed down by the Courts is a powerful weapon as this hits criminals hardest – taking away their liberty and their money.
I would like to thank the Assets Recovery Agency and West Yorkshire Police for their diligence and assistance in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.
I hope this result also sends a strong message to those using auction sites such as eBay that they are not immune from prosecution and further action should they trade in counterfeit goods.”

Thanks for the 305 phone number. I was unable to make contact with these guys for over two weeks. I sent e-mail, after e-mail. I called their 877 number, and waited for hours for someone, anyone to come on line with their live chat.
I got to talk to a Harry Stevens at the other end of the 305 number, and he admitted the dvd's were taken from TV. This is not what they say on the web site.
When I told Harry I disputed the charge, and got a credit from my credit card carrier, he got upset and threatened me with fraud. He told me to cancel the dispute, and he'd give me a credit when I returned the dvd's, which I am still waiting for. There is no way I'd cancel the dispute and trust these guys to give me a credit.
I believe they are crooks, scamming the public. Again, thanks for the number.

I ordered from tvdvdplanet on Jan 9...began getting "bad vibes" the next day. They had already charged my Credit card, so I cancelled it out of suspicions that they might charge more on it. Like a lot of you, I tried calling/emailing them with no response. Much to my amazement, got a notice from postal carrier that there is a package from them at post office. I do not want anything from a bootlegger company. I would like to dispute the charge with my credit card company--do any of you have advice as to whether I should deny acceptance of the delivery, or check out the merchandise to confirm the bootleg/bad quality first? Does anyone have any experience with this aspect of the problem?

It's really disapointing, though. Here I was all set to save up the $150 and buy the Adam 12 complete seasons on DVD from tvaddicts.tv, and now I find out that they are bootlegging? It's awful, I mean, Univeral will NOT release the rest of Adam 12, and teens like me, who just happen to LIKE old TV shows, can't even get ahold of them to enjoy the rest of the wonderful seasons. That goes for alot of other old shows, also..

I just want to thank you for your post exposing TvAddicts.tv. I was sent a link to one of their DVD sets by a friend who wanted it as a birthday present. I was skeptical because the website listed no address for the company, and they were selling a 7-Season set while every other reputable company (i.e. Amazon) only lists 6 in existence! The price was too good to be true, so I did a Google search for company reviews and found your site. You just save me $89.95 of hard earned money and much time and grievance. I am sorry for you and the others who have been scammed. You are right that Google should screen their advertisers. But at least they don't censor- I found their link AND your site at once through a Google search. Thanks and good luck.

I have lost nearly $500.00 to this company and have yet to receive my merchandise. I wish I would have researched this company before buying. To the person named Ashlee who posted her comment on 12/05/06 at 1:18pm.... you have no sympathy???? Boooo-Hooooo. We really needed it. Now what are we going to do??? "sniffle". I'm out $500.00 but what is really terrible is that I don't have ASSlee's sympathy! God! now I'm really upset!

Well well!. So we have a SCAM over there and here. I just got hit about these sites mentioned here like www.tvdvdplanet.com and , when i was looking for info The Outer Limits new series Boxsets.
You have to be very carefull about today when see something that are looking to buy from net. Thats sure.
I just would also like to point with little sarcastic feel, that those real companies who have the rigths for the series, that if they would put those at least during some years out on DVD. It would mean that Scammers would have less people to catch because there would be the real products available. Most rigts holders are well known so tis easy to then buy real product. Or at least they would say that "we are not releasing that tv series in next x years" or so.
Because all people are not interested enough to dig out if those boxsets etc. have really released and when they stumble to sites they give their creditcard numbers to Scammers, and bye bye money, or they get something crap instead.
-------------------------------------------
In end i would ask if the are any tv series collectors or other that knows. I read from one site, about The Outer Limits new series that MGM would release it starting 2005. It definetly have not, excluding season 1.
Any answers to my email sammy56.v@kolumbus.fi
greets
Sammy

Wow, I'm really glad I decided to find a bit information about tvaddicts.tv before I jumped in and bought my favorite show!
I just saw something on Danish television (am from Denmark) about internet shopping and remembered to check their reputation. Thank you for sharing!

Why are old TV-series not available from those who hold the rights? I was very much tempted by an offer on www.tvaddicts.tv, and had to spend som time&effort to find this blog, when I was concerned about quality&security.
McCloud was a big hit in Denmark in the beginning of the 70'es. We had only ONE national TV-channel, so everybody watched. A few years back, when our public service channel was celebrating its 50'es anniversary, they sent some episodes of McCloud, and it was great fun! The music is crazy, the political hints have some edge, and Dennis Weaver is actually charming when he plays the innoscent being seduced by the bright ladies, who help him out - no Miami-Vice-soft-porn, but no doubt McCloud can exchange whispering sweet nothing to get most women spin...
I'm sure DVDs with McCloud would sell well, but only season 1&2 have been released - in region 1 in late 2005, and in 2006 in region 2. I asked in New York in spring 2005, and found out McCloud hadn't even been released on video. Why?
Columbo is sent (again-again), like several other US-series. Does any one know why McCloud is so difficult to get released on DVD, and why it it is not offered to TV-channels like so many other old TV-series?
